A NEW START.

Matthew 26:69-75. NCBV.

69 At that time, as Peter was sitting in the courtyard, a servant girl came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

70 But Peter said to all the people there that he was never with Jesus. He said, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

71 When he left the courtyard and was at the gate, another girl saw him. She said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 Again, Peter said he was never with him, saying, “I swear I don’t know this man Jesus!”

73 A short time later, some people standing there went to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of those who followed Jesus. The way you talk shows it.”

74 Then Peter began to place a curse on himself and swear, “I don’t know the man.” At once, a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter went outside and cried painfully.

Peter must have felt like a complete failure. Just hours earlier, he confidently told Jesus, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You” In verse 35 of the same chapter. Then just a little while thereafter , he did the very thing he said he can never do (Denying Jesus three times in a very public settings) He even swore that he did not know Him.

It was a devastating moment. After realizing what he had done, Peter “went out and wept bitterly.” This could have been the defining moment of his life. He could have given up and concluded that Jesus never would be able to forgive or use him again.

This same Peter became the rock of the church, used by God in mighty ways. He preached before thousands of people on the day of Pentecost, boldly declared the Word of God (Acts 2:14-36), fearlessly appeared before rulers, was rejected, Never compromise, and declared the truth of the Gospel (Acts 4:8-12).
