Matthew 4:18-22. NKJV.
18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
There\’s a popular song we all know very well, when you give your life to Jesus Christ one of the very first and prominent song that\’s very common and easily sang is. I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS, I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS, I HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS. NO TURNING BACK NO TURNING BACK….
In our bible reading we read the account of how Jesus got His early disciples, men who Were in their place of calling minding their own professions \”FISHERMEN\” but yeilded to something they believe will profit them more \”FISHERS OF MEN\”.
Peter and Andrew left their nets immediately and followed Jesus. We probably weren\’t asked to quit our jobs, or leave our families behind but we were called to be disciples. There\’s an adage that says, \”BLOOM WHERE YOU\’RE PLANTED\” With this I believe it is a very good indication that we can function wherever we are and Allow Jesus to lead us.
We can follow Jesus and let Him come with us into our families, into our workplaces, into our neighborhoods and we will be an examples of Jesus to others anywhere we go. If we are to be examples of Jesus we must show love, we must be loving, we must bring God\’s peace, and have peace within us. To bring the hope that we have based on Jesus\’ gaining for us our salvation, we must be people of hope.
If we want others to believe in forgiving, and accepting God, we must be forgiving and accepting Him in our own lives. Peter, Andrew, James and John and the other eight men followed Jesus to become apostles. The twelve men were closest to Jesus but one of them, Judas, would be tempted by greed and possibly by fear and would turn away to betray Him. Peter would deny him and the others run away out of fear, yet apart from Judas who hanged himself on a tree and died others would have a change of heart and then would remain faithful to their death.
We will have to decide for ourselves if we would answer Jesus call and follow Him. It may not be as easy as that but a call of personal devotion. However Being a disciple will never be an easy task. We might face rejection or ridicule from even our closest family members or friends. But the peace and joy in our hearts that comes from staying close to Jesus cannot be replaced by anything the world has to offer.
PRAYER
Our father in heaven, we are joint heir with the son Jesus Christ. Though we are in the world but we are not of the world help us to stand steadfastly without fail even till the end in Jesus name amen.
REFLECTION
A call to follow Jesus Christ is a personal call of devotion to God. Take your decision of whom to follow. Christ\’s followers trustfully obey and submit to his will by faith, even when it exceeds understanding. “Jesus answered him, \’If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him\’”.
