James:3.13-17 (GNB)
13 Are there any of you who are wise and understanding? You are to prove it by your good life, by your good deeds performed with humility and wisdom.
14 But if in your heart you are jealous, bitter, and selfish, don\’t sin against the truth by boasting of your wisdom.
15 Such wisdom does not come down from heaven; it belongs to the world, it is unspiritual and demonic.
16 Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also disorder and every kind of evil.
17 But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy.
A good deed is an action that one takes that is purely for the benefits of the receiving party in which you expect no compensation, recognition or thank you. You do it for the sake of being helpful as part of your human endeavours to ease someones pain.
In doing good to others may attract some personal benefits to the person that did it which may not came in form of material reward but has a way of giving you self fulfillment and keeps your mind cool and feeling of goodness. It is a social action [responsibility] for the needy. At times it gives you new perspective of life and keeps you away from focusing only on your own self needs.
\”Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven\” (Matthew 5:16). And again in 1timothy 5:25 the bible says \”Likewise, good work are obvious and those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden, Yes! Says the spirit, they will rest from their labour for their deeds will follow them\”.
Pual was adressing the churche in Ephesus that their good deeds have been recorded for them, despite the fact that they lived in a time when immorality was highly practiced yet they refused to joined them in the practice of what was evil. Revelation 2:2.
\”Beware of practicing unrighteousness before other people in other to be seen by them for then you will have no reward from your father who is in heaven. Thus when you give to the needy sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogue and in the streets that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, So that your father who sees in secret will reward you\”. (Matthew 6: 1-4).
\”And let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season we will reap if we do not give up\”. (Galatians 6:9).
The bible says that believers good deeds do follow them into eternity in Philippines 2:13
\”For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasures\”. \”And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works\”. (Hebrew 6:9). All these should be our heart desire always in a bid to doing good deeds.
Have you ever seen anyone who claimed to be wise but who acted foolishly? Not at all! True wisdom can be measured by a person\’s good character and good deeds. Just as you can identify a tree by it\’s fruits so also we can be evaluated by the wisdom we displayed or the way the person acted foolishly. A foolish act leads to disorderliness but wisdom leads to peace and orderliness.
When you\’re fund of escalating conflict or gossip against another person or perhaps you like to sow seed of discord amongst brethren or friends that\’s not good deeds you must have to watch it, for whatever a man sows, he must definitely reap.
\”Don\’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another \’s interest , not just for your own . The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had\”. (Philipisns 2: 3-5).
However, for your good deeds to be relevant, you must be a selfless person who is ready to sacrifice your own comfort for another person\’s where it matters most. For the word of God says \”Let your light so shine that others may see it and glorify your Father who is in heaven\”.
\”Those who obey their human nature cannot please God . But you do not live as your human nature tells you to instead, you live as the spirit tells you to , if infact God\’s Spirit lives in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. Therefore live a life that will please God and will be of a good work unto you. Thanks for reading. Remain blessed and happy Sunday. Calvary Greetings.
It is important that as Christians we endeavor to do a good deed daily. We all have 24hrs in a day and this deed doesn’t have to be anything complicated. We also live in an era of social media where people post everything they do. Let us be mindful and not get carried away by posting all the good things we do in people’s lives. Don’t do good because people might be watching, do it because you love God and you love God is to love the people around you.
