PROCRASTINATION

Joshua 18:3-6. NKJV

Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?
-Joshua 18 : 3

Pick out from among you three men for each tribe, and I will send them; they shall rise and go through the land, survey it according to their inheritance, and come back to me.
-Joshua 18 : 4

And they shall divide it into seven parts. Judah shall remain in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory on the north.
-Joshua 18 : 5

You shall therefore survey the land in seven parts and bring the survey here to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord our God.
-Joshua 18 : 6

Joshua wondered why some of the tribes of Israelites had not bothered to come for their own portion of land to settle their people like the other tribes. He then called all the tribes involved and reminded them on what to do to inherit their inheritance haven entered the promised land.

Procrastination is a time waster and a discouragement; often times we delay in carrying out assignment which we considered boring , difficult or not agreeable with what we wanted at the moment.

But to put off anything we are asked to do or that demands doing continuously is act of procrastination. It shows lack of disciplines and depicts stewardship of time management as well as disobedience to God’s will. Some of us must have been a victim of procrastination and often times pay dearly for such delays.

Procrastination is one of the main cause of barriers blocking us from getting up in making right decision and living up to our life’s expectations. Some times people tends to miss an available opportunity just because they wasted time in postponing what should have been done at a time it was meant to be done . Often times feelings of regret and guilt resulting from missed opportunity lingers longer when what we missed seems golden and was directly caused by being hesitant and delay in taking action.

Procrastination could also caused hardship to its victim, it is a strong and mysterious force that keeps people from completing the most urgent or important task in their lives to the point of causing inconveniences.. for example the Egyptians taught by keeping the people of Israel will add to their advantage but they misfired because the more they kept them the more the Hebrews amongst them continuously multiplied and grew stronger to challenged the authorities of their slave masters.
Exd 1:12 “But the more the Israelites were oppressed the More they increased in number and spread out. The Egyptians couldn’t stand them any longer”.

As with most bad habits we developed along the line as we live our lives, procrastination can possibly be overcome when we honestly decides to put it off in other to achieve a greater goal without delays.
we most learn to recognize the fact that we are procrastinating and the core reasons for such habits and why we must put it off.

It may sound reasonable that not every procrastinate behavior is borne out of poor time management rather caused due to wrong prioritizing of work load and time allocations. If we procrastinate over a long period of time, it can demotivates us and cause disillusion instead of inspiration to accomplish a task.

Ephesians 5:15-16 says \”Walk in Wisdom See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil\”.

In apportioning time to tasks so as to gain much accomplishment not letting anything out due to procrastination we must apply wisdom as Colossians 4:5 reminds us to “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time”.

Both Ephesians 5:16 and Colossians 4:5 all mentioned redeeming the time meaning you can regain time wastage by appropriate use of your time without shifting or putting off any task to cause unnecessary delays rather we should live in constant awareness of the fact that time ticks like the ticking clock. The phrase in Ephesians 5: “Making the most of every opportunity” says it all that we should not allow any opportunity to skip us due to wrong use of time used in procrastinating.

  1. This is such an encouraging word because procrastination is definitely the thief of time. I still find it easy to fall into its trap and procrastinate over doing certain things through worry or for other reasons. Once we recognise procrastination operating in our lives then it needs to be tackled. Often once I do the very thing I have put off doing, I find it wasn’t so bad after all. Bless you.
