Jonah 2:1-2 NIV.
1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
Jonah cried out to God from the belly of the whale. What a place for a prayer meeting! This should teach us that there is no place on earth where we cannot or should not pray to God. There is no situation we can be in, where God will be unable to hear us and deliver us. Note Jonah being in the fish belly was considered to be in \”hell\” of a place. Which can also be termed \”grave\” in many cases. It was as if Jonah was dead and gone and the fish\’s belly was his tomb, but God heard him and brought him back.
The psalmist in their various verses of it\’s book repeatedly confirmed God\’s quick intervention whenever anyone is in distress and called to Him irrespective of the surrounding circumstances He hears and delivers immediately. \”In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. (Psalms 18:6 ). \”In my distress I cried to the Lord, and He answered me\”. (psalms 120:1 ) \”Out of my distress I called upon the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free and in a large place\”. (Psalms 118:5).
Is there any other indication or signal you want to see before you know that God is the ultimate when it comes to getting out of your distress, the only channel you can tune to and you will get faster audience. Is your case as Jonah who out of disobedience was running away from God and he ended up in a FISH BELLY, Or are you facing a terrible uncertainties that one may consider a DEAD END , No solution at sight then CALL TO THE LORD!!!
Luke 18:1-7 is the corresponding answer whenever you called upon the Lord in your distress. 1 Then Jesus used this story to teach his followers that they should always pray and never lose hope. 2 “In a certain town there was a judge who did not respect God or care about people. 3 In that same town there was a widow who kept coming to this judge, saying, ‘Give me my rights against my enemy.’ 4 For a while the judge refused to help her. But afterwards, he thought to himself, ‘Even though I don’t respect God or care about people, 5 I will see that she gets her rights. Otherwise she will continue to bother me until I am worn out.’”
6 The Lord said, “Listen to what the unfair judge said. 7 God will always give what is right to his people who cry to him night and day, and he will not be slow to answer them.
PRAYER
O God, it is always better to follow you than to run from your will. But even if, like Jonah did, we have found ourselves in great distress due to our wandering away from you I know that you will hear the cry of the truly penitent heart. We are all often in need of undeserved deliverance. Please have mercy on us and hear our cries of distress and delivers us in Jesus name Amen
REFLECTION
I tell you, God will help his people quickly. But when the Son of Man comes again, will he find those on earth who believe in him?” (Luke 18:8).
