Ephesians 4:20-24. NCBV.

20 But what you learned in Christ was not like this. 21 I know that you heard about him, and you are in him, so you were taught the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught to leave your old self—to stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self becomes worse, because people are fooled by the evil things they want to do. 23 But you were taught to be made new in your hearts, 24 to become a new person. That new person is made to be like God—made to be truly good and holy.

It sounds a bit like throwing away an old overcoat or shawl, to put on a new garments in the concept of “putting on the new self” This is emphasized repeatedly in Scripture. Dose it really sound that simple? . We might question as if transformation happens as easily as changing our dirty clothing.

But that is exactly what the apostle Paul was trying to advised Christian believers to do in Ephesians 4. As he wrote, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24). NKJV.

When talking about the new self, Paul is referring to a renewed or regenerated person, one who has turned away from old ways to a new and improved state of being. This new self is a holy and pure self, striving to be like God and free from sin. It’s much like the “new humanity” Paul refers to in Ephesians 2:15, \”By setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace\”

For it has pleased the Father that all the divine fullness , the sum total of the divine perfection, powers, and attributes should dwell in Him permanently. So that our minds and very souls shall endeavor to be like God himself, righteous, true, perfect, and holy. This new self has Christ as our head or Our Spiritual Leader.

In essence, just as we take off an old, worn-out clothes and put on a fine, befitting beautiful new one, we are to do the same with the \”New Godly Self\”. the self that strives to be sin-free and in perfect alignment with the Lord. We are to put off, or get rid of, the old version of ourselves which is slave to sin that walks in darkness, destined for death . For the wages of sin is death.

Be that new person, Paul is urging his audience. Turn from the old and embrace the new.

PRAYER
Our heavenly father thank you for the truth that\’s in Jesus Christ which we were taught and have heard. We are relaying on your mercy for the ability to do away with our old manner of selfish attitude which is corrupted through deceitful desires that hinders us and grant us the Will to put on New Self which is in Christ to help us live a worthy life of glory to God in Jesus name amen.

REFLECTION

We must align ourselves with the Fruits which Paul addressed in Galatians 5:22-23 as the fruits of the Spirit, include love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We should practice these gifts of the Spirit to enable us wear the New Garment of Regeneration
