Proverbs 27:1-5. NKJV.
27 Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.
4 Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent,
But who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 Open rebuke is better
Than love carefully concealed.
The Book of Proverbs makes for very interesting reading. This passage \”Do not boast about tomorrow,For you do not know what a day may bring forth\”. makes me think of the sayings, \”Pride comes before a fall,\” and \”Don\’t toot your own horn.\” \”The Bigger they are, the Harder they Fall\”.
The origin of the phrase ‘The Bigger they are the harder they fall’ is believed to have come from the sport of boxing. Not surprisingly, there were earlier expressions that meant the same thing and used similar wording. One of the first recorded incidences is in the poet Claudian’s Rufian, essentially translating to “Men are raised on high in order that they may fall more heavily.”
You use the expression ‘The Bigger They Are the Harder They Fall’ to indicate that the more powerful or successful someone is, the more disastrous a loss is to accept. Fame today may not be permanent and just because one has succeeded in one endeavor does not mean that one will be successful in everything.
No one can predict what the future will bring, and that can mean further success or failure. There is much happiness for some people when they see a person fail. This is especially true if the person holds a high position or is in a profession that is considered to be held to a higher standard.
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.\” Since we do not know what the future holds and we do not control what will happen, it would be foolish for us to brag about what we will do, because things could turn out otherwise. You never can predict because you\’re not God.
We make our plans, yes, but we say \”If God wills\”. This proverb applies to all of us. It does not, however, apply to God. He knows what a day may bring forth; He can speak about what he will do in the future. Scripture is filled with passages in which God foretells what he is about to do, and time and again his words prove true. For God to speak about the future is not empty boasting but a trustworthy word.
In business, we see people who have worked with a dedicated team of people take credit for the result without mentioning their team members. In the long run, no one likes a boastful person. In addition to this, someone who is always talking about themselves is not appreciating the value of others. If our eyes are always on ourselves, we don\’t have time for others.
We all know the story of David And Goliath in the bible
We all have gifts and we all succeed at something. It may not be something that will win an award, but it will be worth everything in the eyes of God. God measures success in very different ways than the world does. God just wants us to become the person he created us to be. When we succeed in loving others and following his commandments, we will enjoy the reward promised to us and earned for us by Jesus, eternal life with him in heaven.
PRAYER
Most High Good grant unto us a Worthy heart to focus more on you with humility than on self with haughty spirit. Help us to be selfless when dealing with others in Jesus name amen
REFLECTION
Proverbs 16:18 declares, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Verse 18 links to verse 19:
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
